Brand Storytelling: the foundations of your B2B brand strategy
For a B2B brand to be relevant, it must lead a story that hooks the audience almost as much as the latest Netflix series.
Brand narrative helps us identify and enhance its authenticity, and in an environment where decisions are made between professionals and organizations, this element becomes even more critical.
Brand storytelling is the art of creating the story your company is going to tell in a way that connects with its target audiences. Although it may be related to it, it is not the corporate history of your company.
In the B2B world, this narrative is not just a communication resource, but a strategic approach to building trust, generating value, and strengthening long-term relationships with clients, partners, and even employees. It is not about the classic model of mission, vision, and purpose — which often creates a wide distance between company and receiver — but rather a meeting point where organizational culture is reflected in a narrative capable of attracting and retaining other businesses.
How do we define our storytelling?
We only need to look at the elements that make up the great stories around us and transfer to our brand and communication strategy the narrative techniques that work in other areas such as writing, cinema, or legends.
What every story must have: desire and conflict
Desire and conflict are the two elements that set a story in motion. The protagonist has a desire to fulfill, but something prevents it — a conflict. The same happens with B2B brands.
The desire that drives the story is that of the protagonist: what they fight for every day and what motivates them as an organization. It would be the equivalent of the company’s classic mission, but narrated in a way that mobilizes key audiences such as corporate clients, distributors, or strategic stakeholders.
When defining our desire and our story, we have to decide who we want the protagonist to be: our brand or one of our target audiences? In B2B, it is often more effective to place the client at the center of the narrative, showing how our company accompanies them on the journey to achieve their own success.
The protagonist’s desire will be the core of the story and will be shared, totally or partially, with the other protagonists.
For example, Google positions itself as the protagonist of its story with the desire to “organize the world’s information.” Every corporate move responds to that desire, and its different key audiences — users, companies, advertisers — join that journey.
Conflict, on the other hand, is what constantly prevents that desire from being fulfilled. Defining it well is as important as defining the desire, since this struggle of forces is what hooks the audience. In B2B, this conflict can be expressed in terms of industry challenges, technological barriers, or efficiency problems that prevent clients from reaching their goals.
Storytelling as a lighthouse for operations and communication
Based on the fact that it is built upon corporate culture and takes into account the characteristics of its target audiences, good storytelling is the guide and link between the two sides of an organization:
Operational approach: storytelling should guide hiring policy, R&D, and business development. Being consistent with the narrative in these areas allows us to align what we are with what we do, creating a brand-organization that conveys authenticity even in a business context. When facing major strategic decisions — product launches, mergers, expansion into new markets — we must return to our desire and ask ourselves: are we responding to it?
Communicational approach: storytelling is the foundation of our brand communication. Everything must respond to it. In B2B, this translates into how we communicate our value proposition in sales pitches, trade fairs, thought leadership content, key account marketing actions, or even in how we design presentations and proposals.
Regardless of whether the organization has a cultural definition based on the classic model of mission, vision, and values, Brand Storytelling is the most important strategic element of a brand. In B2B, it is what manages to connect the internal and external parts of the organization within a single framework, reinforcing credibility and creating emotional bonds even in rational decision-making environments.
Brand Storytelling is not a creative luxury but a strategic tool that connects the essence of a company with its key audiences. In the B2B environment, where decisions are based as much on reason as on trust, having a solid narrative is what makes the difference between being just another option or becoming the chosen partner.
